About
This is when it all started: watching an episode of Star Wars. I was told to watch this saga by my Master Supervisor at the University of Bologna, somebody that has been and still is a Mentor for both my academic and my private life. I then started wondering what could be like to write a proposal on women and power in the Italian parliament. Partially, to rehabilitate the idea on women in politics in a country that has been governed by Silvio Berlusconi, a PM that preferred bunga bunga parties over less funny meetings.
I am now doing a PhD at the University of Lancaster, investigating gender and working practices in the Italian Parliament. I have already carried out an analysis on the construction 'intensifier+adjective' and I am now working on war metaphors.
There is no assumption on the differences in the usage of linguistic features between male and female speakers. The purpose of the study takes into consideration the working environment as a 'Community of Practice', that has been defined masculine and masculinist (cfr. previous studies on gender talk in the workplace). The project is timely and include broader ideas on stereotypes and the concept of the 'double-bind', although revisited for the Italian context.
