Thesis Title: Settlement patterns in Sicily and Calabria in the pre-Norman and Norman periods

Alex Metcalfe

About

My research focuses on the chronological period covering the transition to Norman rule in the southern Italian region of Calabria and the island of Sicily, from c.1000 to c.1150. I am currently investigating changes and continuities to settlement in these regions and their relationship to this political change. The source materials which I am utilising for this research include Latin narratives, Arabic geographical texts, Latin and Greek charter materials and toponimy.

More generally my historical interests include the medieval Mediterranean, Sicilian history from the sixth to the fourteenth centuries and the spread of Islam in the Mediterranean between the seventh and tenth centuries.

My Phd is attached to the "Norman Edge: Identity and State-Formation on the Frontiers of Europe" major project, funded by the AHRC, which is due to run until 2011.
